barcode technology
When reliability, speed and accuracy matter, utilization of bar-coded labels and barcode readers are a must.
Barcodes are simply a symbol to represent a series of numbers or letters. Each number or letter is converted into a vertical bar combination, allowing a reader to read and interpret the information in a consistent and time-efficient manner.
Barcode labels can be created to represent an item's unique ID# or a manufacturer's serial number. In QM, you can also include 3 lines of text describing the item from your data, a fixed line of text, or your agency logo.
Readers are used to capture the data represented by the barcode for data input. All readers offered by Intelligent Solutions can read multiple barcode symbologies, thus will allow you to integrate your current barcodes into the system, or use pre-printed barcode labels.
Tethered scanners are connected directly to the computer running the application and act as a "keyboard wedge", meaning that the scanner inputs the bar-coded information into a field in the database rather than you typing it in. Speed and accuracy are the advantages. IS also offers a wireless scanner for more mobility.
Portable scanners are used to receive and transmit data to and from your QM application. Uploading your QM data directly onto the portable allows you to perform an on-site verification of location of equipment or sign in or out pallets of equipment that you cannot conveniently take to your PC. The data is then downloaded back to your main QM system where the changes can be implemented into your data.
Some PDA's can also have scanners as an accessory. If you currently have a PDA with a scanner, and it can collect ID numbers in a text file format, QM can use this file to perform a variety of functions.
RFID - This new technology was designed for the retail industry to track the movement of large quantities of inventory. It does have it's time saving advantages, however, we have found that with the specific needs that government agencies have for performing "hands-on" inventories, to keep surveillance equipment "hidden", and budget constraints, that RFID does not offer the "all-answer" solution for government asset management. However, this solution can be discussed as an option. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your specific questions and needs.
